NAME:
Sue Shaw

AGE WHEN CONTRACTED MALARIA:
50

OCCUPATION:
Recruitment Manager

WHERE DID SHE CONTRACT THE DISEASE:
Gambia

TYPE OF TRAVEL:
Package holiday

Situation: Whilst holidaying in Gambia with her husband, Sue wasn’t aware she needed to take any precautions against malaria.
A week after returning to the UK, she went to her GP feeling extremely unwell, with a high fever, vomiting and severe fatigue. It was then that she was diagnosed with the most life threatening strain of malaria. Had Sue waited any longer to seek medical attention, her doctor told her that she would have died.

Outcome: Sue was unable to return to work for several weeks and lost a stone and a half in weight. Despite being an active person and regular gym user, the effect of malaria has had a long lasting impact on her lifestyle. Sue and her husband are still keen travellers, visiting India regularly, but always make sure that they now take the necessary precautions when visiting malarious destinations.
