NAME:
Kate Humble
AGE WHEN CONTRACTED MALARIA:
31 and 33
OCCUPATION:
Wildlife and Science Presenter and Journalist
WHERE DID SHE CONTRACT THE DISEASE:
Zanzibar and Ghana
TYPE OF TRAVEL:
Holiday
Situation: Kate was on a week-long holiday in Zanzibar when she first contracted cerebral malaria.
She had spent a lot of time in Africa before without contracting malaria, so she thought she did not need to take precautions for just a short trip. Kate was only home for a couple days before she started feeling ill with shakes and sweats. Her husband took her to the hospital where she was diagnosed with malaria. She spent a week in the hospital before she was well enough to leave.
Kate had a second experience with malaria. She went to a remote part of Ghana during the dry season and thought she would not be at risk. She was diagnosed with malaria shortly after her return.
Outcome: Kate has lived to tell about both of her experiences with malaria, which has made her very aware of the severity of this disease. She feels incredibly lucky to have lived through both bouts of one of the deadliest strains of malaria which makes her strongly advise seeking medical advice and taking medication to prevent this happening to anyone else.
