NAME:
Sarah Roberts

AGE WHEN CONTRACTED MALARIA:
38

OCCUPATION:
Children's Nurse

WHERE DID SHE CONTRACT THE DISEASE:
Indonesia

TYPE OF TRAVEL:
Career break

Situation: Sarah took precautions for the part of her trip that included malarious destinations, but was sick after taking some of her antimalarial tablets.
She wasn't worried however and continued her course of antimalarials. She rarely got bitten and so also didn't bother using insect repellent.

Outcome: Even though Sarah did not contract the most deadly form of malaria she spent several days in hospital and was off work for a further month. She lost a stone in weight and was permanently exhausted. It took a full two months for Sarah to fully recover and she is happy to now be able to put it all behind her. Sarah was well aware of the risk of malaria but never really thought she would be affected by it. She has learnt a valuable lesson and will be extra vigilant the next time she goes travelling.
